IN her letter (March 7), Jacqueline Cotter rightly criticises the cost to the Irish taxpayer of €8,000 for Martin Cullen’s helicopter trip to Kerry.

If instead of destroying three-quarters of Ireland’s railways half a century ago we had spent some of the money squandered on roads on modernisation and expansion, he would have been able to do the trip by TGV (high speed train) at 300km/h, somewhat quicker than by helicopter, which can only manage a measly 250km/h, and for a for a tiny fraction of the cost.
