Pole position

A RATHER prominent pole outside the old Douglas House on Maryborough Hill in Douglas, Cork, succumbed to a direct hit last Sunday night.

Pole position

Maryborough Hill has been in this state for many years — one could say there are unnecessary road hazards here?

Firstly, the pole was deemed unsuitable for the task and at 4pm on Monday an ESB crew set to work. They finished around 7pm when our electricity supply was restored. This is the busiest time of day for cooking in most households. Heating, including gas, was also affected by this job. Did the ESB even consider the effect on local consumers of a three-hour outage on a cold day?

Secondly, the pole was reinstated in the very same spot. Any possibility that this might be moved in further to a safer position once again seems to have been dismissed or overlooked. Flann O’Briain must be chuckling in his grave.
