WHILE nothing can excuse the mother in the Roscommon case, the duty of parenthood was also vested in the father, or fathers, of her children.

It may be 2009, but the mother still bears every burden.

It is time to remove automatic custody from mothers, many of whom are not fit for the role. All fathers, fit or unfit, need to be more accountable and visible than they are at present.
