Crowley’s resignation is a huge blow to the campaign for equal rights

I COMMEND the great work of Niall Crowley whose leadership in the Equality Authority and contribution to equality and human rights in Ireland has been outstanding.

Crowley’s resignation is a huge blow to the campaign for equal rights

His principled resignation demonstrates the calibre of a truly great leader but it also signals a huge loss to the arena of equality and human rights in this country. The Equality Authority has been hugely influential in raising awareness on equality issues among young people and providing indicators for the need for equality in our society.

These savage cuts will limit the range of work being done by the authority and will make it almost impossible for it to properly facilitate the essential services it provides. It is now time for the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform to reconsider the 43% cut to the authority’s budget.
