Alternatives to stem cell research

UCC’s decision to permit experimentation on human embryos is utterly incredible in light of the fact that there are real alternatives.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Japanese scientists at Kyoto University used skin cells from adult mice to make cells which are indistinguishable in every way from embryonic stem cells.

It was also recently reported that Professor John Martin of the University of London is carrying out very promising research using a patient’s own stem cells to repair heart damage.

UCC’s move is not only morally wrong, it is also scientifically regressive. Its decision is indefensible and the university's governing body must be brought to task.
