ANNIE MOORE has achieved a significance in death that she would never have imagined possible in her lifetime. She was the first immigrant through America’s Ellis Island and her grave in New York was marked this weekend, 84 years after her death.

She symbolises all that is tragic yet optimistic about immigration, and represents the millions of poor and hungry who sought a better life in America.

Many of Annie’s contemporaries realised their dreams, but this weekend the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform warned that significant illegal immigration of Irish people to the US has resumed.
