Why one student backs college fees

I MUST be one of the few students in favour of the reintroduction of third-level fees. It annoys me that so many people misrepresent what is being proposed.

Some think it is beneficial to the less-well-off that there are no third-level fees. On the contrary, it benefits the most well-off.

The less-well-off should never pay fees and if this proposed plan is introduced, they still won’t.

The better-off should pay for two simple reasons. First of all, they can afford it.

Every year we see a great number of students entering third-level education from fee-paying secondary schools.

They can afford to pay, but just don’t want to do so, despite what student leaders may say to the contrary.

Secondly, look at the debt that is facing UCC and a lot of other third-level institutions. The Government currently gives money to these institutions, but not enough, nor can it afford to give more. Why should students suffer cutbacks because those better off don’t want to pay?

Students enjoy wonderful facilities and the only way to keep them is to set fees for those who can afford to pay .

If cutbacks are introduced they will have a major impact on the less-well-off. It is in the best interests of students, universities and the country that the better-off contribute accordingly. It may not be popular, but it is fair.

It’s time for politicians of all parties to stop taking the populist view and do what’s right.
