RECENTLY my daughter arrived home with a little puppy she rescued from young children who were taking great pleasure using it as a football.

I watched it hiding in any corner it could find and shaking when approached by a human being.

What is it in the psyche of so many Irish people that we can treat animals with such cruelty. Our reputation for animal welfare is not one to be coveted by any civilised nation. Our laws do little or nothing to protect our animals.
