Real GAA fans love both games
I was appalled to read that you suggest that the biggest threat to hurling is Gaelic football. In one felt swoop you have insulted all those of us who work tirelessly coaching and promoting both games.
I have often read your articles with interest and have at times both agreed and disagreed with your view points on various topics.
However, on this occasion you have gone too far. I don’t wish here to list out the amount of time I spend each year in promoting both hurling and football in school and club but suffice it to say that it is substantial. There will always be those who prefer one code over another but it is always governed by the fact that we are all GAA people first and foremost.
While I can agree with you that the finals you mentioned were not given due importance with the switching of fixtures, the huge leap of conclusion that you make that football is endangering hurling is mind-boggling and indeed shows an obvious lack of understanding of what constitutes the real GAA person.
It might be more pertinent for you to absolve yourself of the opinion that Gaelic football is a lesser sport and visit those clubs who struggle in an area where hurling is “king”. Having being part of a huge hurling tradition myself and being involved at all levels of football I can say that I love both sports passionately and you do an intolerable disservice to those of us who love our Gaelic games.
