Recommended reading for Gay Byrne

ALAN DUKES recently proposed a reading list for Gay Byrne to help ‘educate’ him about the EU.

Perhaps I could add a suggestion to his list of Europhile authors. It is The Great Deception: Can the European Union survive?

Meticulously researched and footnoted by authors Christopher Booker and Richard North, and running to more than 600 pages, it exhaustively documents how the British government, in the form of Edward Heath, conspired with other EU leaders in his push to bring Britain into the then EEC.

The fact that he and his top civil servants deceived the British public regarding the degree to which Britain was being asked to surrender its powers of self-government only became apparent 30 years later in confidential papers released by the British Foreign Office.
