Test of democracy

THE EU has denounced the “travesty of democracy” in Zimbabwe.

Presumably, it would refuse to recognise the outcome of such a flawed process.

The EU thus duly defends the democratic right of a sovereign people “to vote and freely express their political will.” Hence Zimbabwean self-determination.

However, the people of Ireland have spoken as free citizens at the ballot box. They, too, are equally entitled, as of right, to democratic self-determination.

Hence popular sovereignty.
