North MP’s remarks on gays hit a new low

THE remarks made by the DUP chair of the Stormont health committee, Iris Robinson MP, MLA, in which she suggested that homosexuals should seek psychiatric counselling to “turn them around” must be a new low even by Northern Ireland standards.

In recent times, the Northern state, with its sectarian subtext and lamentable deficiencies in coming to terms with even the most rudimentary elements of democracy, was beginning to emerge into the 21st century.

However, with such an antediluvian mindset displayed by Ms Robinson, it appears the North is not ready yet to embrace the modern world.

With such views, I am surprised Ms Robinson didn’t recommend that gays and lesbians present themselves to a witchdoctor for a ‘cure’.
