Saying no may be Europe’s last chance
The debate has got lost in issues and short term opt-outs for Ireland but most people have no awareness of the big picture of where the EU is headed. We simply don’t understand the implications of giving ever more power to unelected leaders of this unfolding political and military entity.
For those who feel confused, coerced or think there is no alternative to voting yes, consider what some wise people say.
When there are only two choices, always look for a third. In this case, the only possibility to promote a third option is to vote no or not vote at all.
This means: a) You will choose not to sleepwalk into saying yes to something that you don’t understand and yet has profound implications for your future and your children; b) You will choose not to vote out of fear; c) You will be a voice for millions of your European neighbours who share your concerns but were not given a chance to vote, and; d) You will have created a challenge to Europe to rethink its future and the real nature of democracy.
We Irish are the only ones who get to choose. It is an awesome responsibility.
May we find the wisdom to choose well. This may be Europe’s last chance.
