One answer to our greatest ever challenge

THE response by Adam Douglas (Letters, April 14) to my letter (April 5) is typical of the mindset of the anti–nuclear lobby.

One answer to our greatest ever challenge

They usually wheel out in their defence the standard emotional mantra of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. This is old hat.

It is Mr Douglas who needs the reality check — the reality being that nuclear power is the way forward and is a reality. He may also be surprised to learn that James Lovelock, renowned earth scientist, endorses the revival of the nuclear industry — given the benefits of nuclear power over conventional fossil fuel and other energy sources. Today, one by one and in ever increasing numbers, governments around the world are embracing nuclear power as fundamental to their strategies of national energy security and global environmental responsibility.

After assessing the human and environmental realities around them, national leaders are recognising that nuclear energy today represents nothing less than an indispensable asset if our world is to meet what must be recognised as the greatest challenge in human history.
