Marriage by law is exactly that

IN his report headlined ‘Wedding’ video used in anti-gay campaign” (March 21), Conor Ryan bizarrely places inverted commas around the terms “marriage” and “wedding” every time the nuptials of Mr Fay and his partner Mr Moulton are mentioned.

Marriage by law is exactly that

I’m sure I’m not the only reader who interpreted this as casting doubt on the legitimacy, legal or otherwise, of the marriage.

Since the men’s marriage was properly performed according to the laws of Canada, and is a matter of public record in that country — and further, is fully recognised in the state of New York, where the couple live — why did Mr Ryan — or indeed your editorial staff — feel it necessary to express such doubt?
