Empty promises

DECADES ago we were told food would be cheaper and we would save a fortune on new cars if we joined the EEC, as it was then known.

Some 40 years later, we still don’t have cheap cars. The State rips us off on taxation and a recently compiled report by Forfás says that despite the creation of a single European market 18 years ago, we are still paying far higher prices than the rest of Europe.
