First address defects in our own democracy

YOUR editorial (December 28) adopted an attitude of preening self-satisfaction in relation to Pakistan when referring to the terrible events there.

Your statement that “it is a privilege to live in a society that regularly and peacefully elects and dismisses its leaders” is somewhat removed from the reality of Irish democracy.

We have not dismissed a government since 1987. Much more than that, as your editorial shows, we do not seem to see anything wrong with the development of a one-party state.
