IRELAND’S performance on human rights is to be put under the spotlight for the first time next week when the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for human rights makes a week-long visit.

A former UN specialist on human rights in Europe, Thomas Hammarberg will meet a wide range of people and organisations during his visit and will product a report early next year.

He plans to deal with the functioning of the gardaí and judiciary, women’s rights, treatment of asylum seekers and the situation of Travellers and children, among others.
