IT IS inevitable that a substantial section of our whitefish fleet will accept an EU package aimed at reducing the number of fishing vessels chasing an ever-diminishing stock of fish.

Under a voluntary scheme which is expected to be approved within days, about 120 whitefish trawlers will be decommissioned.

The commercial fishing industry has undergone tremendous change in recent decades. The fishing effort is being concentrated in ever fewer hands.
