JUST AS it is difficult to summon much sympathy for hospital consultants struggling on €225,000 plus “Mickey Mouse” salaries for their public commitments, it is difficult to imagine that Aer Lingus staff are in much need of our sympathy.

As the prospect of a strike looms at the troubled but cash-rich airline irreconcilable and uncomfortable truths are unavoidable.

The most basic is that unless Aer Lingus gets its costs in order it will go the way of the Zeppelin airships and become no more than a sepia-tinted memory from a different, isolationist time.
