Bertie’s mandate

ANYONE else fed up with the Fianna Fáil mantra being bleated out by Brian Cowen, Mary Hanafin, et al ... that Bertie Ahern has a mandate from the electorate to be Taoiseach?

He was never elected Taoiseach by the people of Ireland.

Recently he used taxpayers’ money to buy support from the all-sorts — PDs, Greens and a number of Independents — to continue as Taoiseach. He was then elected by Fianna Fáil TDs and those whose support he had bought.

In fact, he is probably lucky that he doesn’t rely on the electorate for his job. He’d be out on his ear long ago if that were the case.
