Losing our way

JAMES A GLEESON (Letters, September 11) may be right when he complains that we in Ireland are losing our hard won independence through “a transfer of more power to the EU”.

He may be right also when he says this is due to the fact that our democratic structures are rapidly ceasing to have any function because we are “a nation of suckers being brainwashed and blindly led up the garden path by hard-necked bureaucrats”.

He certainly raises a relevant question when he asks if any of us cares about our hard-won democratic independence. Whatever about the EU, there was no protest when the then British prime minister made a significant partisan intervention in our recent general election. Mr Gleeson lays the blame for all this with Government and media.
