A larger-than-life presence, Dickie was a force of nature and sustained that tremendous energy to the very end of his working life. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance as the Bull McCabe in Jim Sheridan’s film of John B Keane’s play The Field, a role he was determined to play and one he made his own.

He shared the enthusiasms of his native place passionately and took great satisfaction in supporting Limerick rugby teams, Munster and Ireland and would have enjoyed following Ireland to France tremendously.
