Aer Lingus was no friend of emigrants

AMID all the hullabaloo about Aer Lingus, why does anybody expect it to start acting decently now?

Thousands of Irish people had to emigrate to Britain in the latter half of the 20th century.

It cost them a fortune to fly home with Aer Lingus to a family event such as a wedding or a funeral.

The fare was often the equivalent of several weeks’ wages.

Then along came Ryanair and the same journey could be paid for by half an hour’s work. Aer Lingus then reinvented itself as a ‘low-cost’ airline. Who did they think they were kidding?

History will show Michael O’Leary to have made a far greater contribution to Ireland than any of our political leaders in recent decades.
