Bishops miss the boat
In particular I am pleased they have included in their statement that “the ultimate purpose of the economy and of economic activity is not just to create profit; it is to make life more humane for people”.
It is a pity the bishops did not see fit to issue such a strong statement in late 2005 and early 2006, during the Irish Ferries dispute, which was an even more blatant example of commercial greed triumphing over social responsibility. Certainly, life was not made very humane for many of the Irish workers who lost their jobs there having, in some cases, given the company the best years of their lives.
