Over the past 20 years, we have witnessed in dramatic fashion what the historian Diarmaid Ferriter has aptly termed the “transformation” of this country.

This is most obviously manifested in two ways — the sheer levels of prosperity that our people enjoy in the Ireland of the Celtic Tiger, and also the demographic shifts of the past two decades. Both these changes have brought undoubted and significant benefits, though both also pose new challenges.
