IRISH fishermen, who have decimated salmon and other fish stocks in Irish waters by, in many cases, illegal fishing, exceeding quotas and catches clandestinely landed in Scotland — or sold to Russian trawlers on the high seas for hard cash to bypass Irish monitoring procedures — are now blaming seals for all their woes.

Meanwhile, Irish farmers are doing what they do best: voicing opposition to beef imports from South America.

In Gran Canaria, thousands of restaurateurs and their employees depend on these imports. It enables them to stay in business and provide tourists with affordable meals. Farmers protests would get short shrift here.
