We need action to restore our democracy

IN Cork we have the very undemocratic practice of councillors appointing the lord mayor through an agreement to rotate the post between the main political parties.

Councillors appear shameless in denying citizens the right to choose a lord mayor through the ballot box.

The only justification for this undemocratic practice seems to be that this is how things were done in the distant past when the powers-that-be didn’t think the ‘masses’ should have a say in anything.
