Bus Éireann ban puts smokers at risk

BUS Éireann recently introduced a blanket ban on smoking in the outdoor areas of Bus Áras in Dublin. I have been a commuter and Bus Éireann customer for 10 years between my home in Kells and my job in Dublin.

The ban was introduced without notice to Bus Éireann’s many customers.

I am not whinging about smoking bans. I am struggling to become an ex-smoker and support such bans. However, in the Bus Áras case, they have ordered the puffing punter outside the front door into the hands of waiting junkies, pick-pockets and beggars, many of whom actually proceed to smoke inside the building.

The aggressive begging and often intimidating situation outside the front door of Bus Áras is a poor advertisement for the country and is something I have complained about for years.

Now Bus Éireann, in their wisdom, has decided to throw the smoking customer to the anti-social elements outside the door. Will Bus Éireann management provide security outside the door for their customers who want to smoke? Will they meet with the gardaí and make arrangement for loiterers to be moved on?

Will they recognise that elderly people who have three or four bags cannot easily move in or out the door without risking theft of their possessions? Bus Éireann should reconsider its decision.

Smoking is a dangerous enough habit without adding mugging and beatings as likely smoking-related condiditons.
