Did family issues have bearing on outcome?

I HAVE been talking to a few people about election results. What I found surprising was the reason why the majority of them made up their mind to vote either for Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael.

Did family issues have bearing on outcome?

Like myself, they were persuaded by a report in ‘Alive’, a Catholic monthly freesheet which I received through my door earlier last month.

The front page encouraged voters to ask candidates where their parties stood on life and family issues.

Although I never got around to asking each candidate about these issues, I made enquiries and found that, as I am a practising Catholic, there was no way I was going to vote for Labour, the Progressive Democrats, the Greens, or particularly Sinn Féin.

I wonder if others were influenced in this way as I have not heard it being put forward as a reason in the media.
