GIVEN the dangers inherent in allowing two hurling teams to exit the tunnel together, would it not be better to issue players with their sticks only after they have reached their field positions?

New officials would be needed — maor camáin (hurleys official), possibly supplemented by maor tollána (tunnels official) to ensure players arrive safely to gather their playing equipment.
