Grey voters could make all the difference

ONE of the most remarkable features of the election campaign has been the emergence of the ‘grey vote’ and the recognition by party strategists of its importance.

Some 468,000 voters are aged over-65, accounting for 17% of the electorate.

Moves in recent months to mobilise this voting bloc have resulted in hundreds of older voters attending rallies and tackling politicians.

In addition, more than 30,000 people have signed postcards supporting the Older and Bolder campaign seeking equality for older people from the next government. Now, older voters must decide which party will best serve them best on issues such as adequate State pensions and supports for independent living?

They will not only vote on their own behalf, but on behalf of future generations of older people. Grey voters could decide the election outcome.
