I WAS saddened to read of the imminent closure of the Pfizer plants and expected job losses in Cork. It brings back cruel memories of the early 1980s when many of us were forced to emigrate in search of work. My sincere sympathies are with those affected.

How to save Cork jobs and African lives

The weak underbelly of the Celtic Tiger is exposed. Irish industry is largely at the mercy of a group of accountants in a foreign country who feel nothing for job losses as long as the balance sheet looks healthy and the share price remains buoyant.

The reasons for these closures are, in my opinion, spurious. The company can claim a huge write-off against the losses they made on the withdrawn drugs.
