More than one PO needs better facilities

I WAS surprised to read that the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, John O’Donoghue, has asked An Post to retain its full services in Killarney (Irish Examiner, December 13).

More than one PO needs better facilities

This was a week after his Government failed to acknowledge in the Dáil the need to address the low pay of postmasters who have effectively subsidised the service by providing premises and working at a rate below the minimum wage and, in some cases, below the poverty line.

Communications Minister Noel Dempsey has the power to stop further PO closures and to provide for the upgrading of the entire network. With 44 post offices having closed this year, does anybody in Government have the courage to recognise the crisis facing the service?
