Pay comparison needs major adjustment

THE LATEST figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show the average income for women is 65.7% that of men.

This hardly seems fair until the CSO points out that, when this is adjusted to reflect actual hours worked, women’s pay is 86% of men’s.

In other words, men work far longer hours than women. Despite this, the CSO figures also show that men have higher rates of unemployment than women.
