SADDAM Hussein deserves to be punished for his heinous crimes, but that punishment should only be in accordance with the rule of law, including the rule of international law.

In the past far too many perpetrators of genocide and crimes against humanity have escaped justice, including Idi Amin, Mengitsu and Pol Pot, not to mention the perpetrators of the unlawful wars on Vietnam, East Timor and elsewhere.

It is unfortunate and wrong that Saddam Hussein has been tried and sentenced to death by the victors of an unlawful war perpetrated on the people of Iraq by the US and its allies.
