Road project out of line with EU rules
Incredibly, the castle and stone circle were never subjected to archaeological impact assessment by the NRA.
The roads authority has ignored this EU convention and now proposes a flyover at Carrigaphooca bridge, as well as a major road and a four-acre roundabout inside the bawn of the castle.
As no field inspection or any impact assessment was made prior to the design plans, any subsequent archaeological impact statement justifying the proposed roundabout must be tainted with suspicion.
Will the new impact assessment be genuinely unbiased or a means of justifying a decision the NRA has already arrived at?
I am calling for this matter to be brought to the attention of the Council of Europe committee of ministers by our MEPs.
