Legal muscle needed to eradicate deadly weed

RECENTLY, on a journey from Killarney to Waterford, I was astonished at the proliferation of ragwort growing on the roadsides.

The Noxious Weeds Act decrees that this most poisonous of weeds should be rigorously cut before it flowers.

In the not too distant past the gardaí were most diligent in visiting farms to ensure that owners complied with the law in this regard.

A return to this most wholesome practice is most desirable.

Local authorities, as statutory bodies, should most certainly do everything possible to be compliant with the law and set an example in controlling the growth and spread of a most dangerous weed.
