L-plates and provisional licences not enough

I AM horrified at the number of people killed in road accidents in Ireland recently.

L-plates and provisional licences not enough

It is incomprehensible how Ireland continues the system of probationary licences for anyone over the age of 16. The idea that people with an L-plate learn how to drive, supposedly accompanied by a person with a full licence, is laughable.

Here in Holland you learn how to drive via a recognised driving school with a qualified instructor and a car that is fitted with dual controls. When I return to Ireland I am struck by the bad standard of driving, especially on the ever-growing number of dual carriageways.

Ireland needs to move with the times — the days are long gone when one could tour the country roads at one’s leisure. People need professional tuition to ensure they can protect themselves and others on Irish roads.

The points system can work, but drivers also need to be able to drive properly.
