We need the facts on wind farms near homes

MONDAY last was World Environment Day, and only for Dick Warner’s article in the Irish Examiner, many people would not have known it.

We need the facts on wind farms near homes

We need well balanced and accurate information on how to go about saving our environment.

So far, all we hear about is the cleverly marketed gigantic wind turbine — the so-called solution to all our energy problems.

Wind turbines offshore may be one of many ways to help solve our energy problems, but wind farms near houses will only have adverse effects on people, wildlife and the environment.

I am spokesperson for the Knockraha, Leamlara and District Environmental Association in Co Cork.

We are fighting the proposed development of eight gigantic wind turbines in a populated area where some houses would be within 500 metres of these installations.

Many countries have experienced the very worrying consequences of wind farms over the past 20 years. We must learn from their mistakes. It is the responsibility of the media to do the research and inform people.

We are entitled to know the facts about so-called green wind power.
