OVER the past weekend Americans were commemorating Memorial Day, remembering those who were killed in all the wars.

At the same time, the Irish Examiner published a letter ridiculing the suggestion that David Lord, one of the Irish-born winners of the Victoria Cross in World War II, should be celebrated.

Lord grew up in Wales, so claiming him would seem a bit presumptuous, though we should be thankful for the sacrifices made by him and others, because had it not been for such sacrifices we would probably have ended up under the Nazi jackboot.
