ALL over Europe, especially in countries which opposed the Iraq war, you can hear gleeful tidings that America and Britain have been badly bitten after their Middle East adventure.

"Irak: doutes et douleur des soldats américains," crows Le Monde in a front page story claiming that American soldiers in Iraq are jaded, insecure and fed up with their commanders.

The front page of L'Express blares, 'Mensonges, Manipulations et Erreurs' (lies, misrepresentations and mistakes) in a story about how the US and Britain tried to justify the war. The French media, and they are not alone, seem to be revelling in the Allies' apparent misfortunes.
