Letters to the Editor: Use of poison gas is toxic military tactic

We see how people can be killed because of ethnicity or religion. We see the global rise of strongmen heads of state and supremacism.

The League of Nations helped stop to some degree the spread of poison gas weapons but it couldn’t stop poison gas being used against defenders in Abyssinia (Ethiopia) by troops directed by Italy’s fascist dictator Mussolini and Churchill suggested use of mustard gas on fighters in the north-west frontier, as it was understood in Raj India, by the RAF which spent about quarter of a century making bombing runs over that region. That latter suggestion calls to mind the use of drones in the last twenty years in the same region and adjacent.

And materials got supplied from western states to Saddam Hussein that let him gas Iranian troops and gas a Kurdish town in northern Iraq killing 5000 Kurdish citizens – and the threat to replace high explosives with poison gas on missiles being fired at Tehran led to the ending of the Iran-Iraq war.

Iraqi troops in chemical suits let to panic and leaving homes by Iraqi Kurds. Israel had been very fearful of Syrian chemical weapon units near the Israeli border. After the international outcry when video appeared showing very distressed people in Syria with reports then of poison gas used, international curbs were imposed on Syria’s chemical weapons. Unfortunately, sadly, Israeli air assaults on Syria have by now reached far up in the many hundreds. And sadly, allegations come of Israeli supports having been extended toward violently militant jihadist fighters (influenced by al Qaeda) in Syria.

The UN has expressed horror at casualty figures to Syrian civilians attributed to the Syrian government. We hear 300 civilians were killed in Syrian government bombings of Idlib 24 hours ago. Syria is a devil’s playground in spite of the UN.
