Letter to the Editor: Burdening our children with losses in their futures

Wind, waves, and tidal energy generation will be needed to pay for deficits and losses due to climate change. We must audit and mitigate loss.

Are we really prepared to burden our children and grandchildren with the harsh effects of climate change on top of burdens of debt from the bogus boom?

Can we avoid burdening them any further? How can we mitigate their loss?

We really now should be working to mitigate the worst effects of climate change to reduce the ill effects upon our children.

Even without the effects of storm surges and raised water tables our water supply and sewage systems are liable to be in a crisis in about 15 years. Floods and surges likely with climate change will add to the difficulty. Our children will pay towards bailed out private error-riddled banks in the bogus boom, in their turn, banks are not recalled for saying:

“We all partied in the boom, let’s draw a line through your boomtime overvalued personal mortgage debt.”

The children’s hospital costs seem to be like Brexit, who knows where it’ll end?

State-owned hard plant equipment: poles, copper, exchanges went from Telecom Eireann into private hands in our privatisation of the state telecom provider.

That has led to many sales of the former state telecom? Was there borrowing on asset value and selling on this?

It is a good idea to enable businesses to be able to run communications well, beyond larger urban areas. It could rejuvenate hinterlands.

However we are set to invest more than €3bn in, to be widely available, ‘rural’ broadband from the public purse. How do we know the consortium who will build, maintain and control such a large public-funded item won’t sell on before 25 years when maintenance and renewal are needed? Where then would our billions invested go? Doesn’t it matter for our children?
