Cardinal Newman canonised: A new hubris
When Pope Francis visited Ireland in August last year, the crowds expected by official Ireland, secular or clerical, did not materialise.
It was a smell-the-coffee moment for Catholic Ireland: Its loss of influence, its continuing marginalisation, was writ large. Yesterday’s canonisation of Cardinal John Henry Newman in Rome seemed another such moment.
