Readers blog: Could you live on a mere €102 per week?

Now that we have a budget, perhaps the minister would be good enough as to have a closer look at the anomaly whereby social welfare recipients under the age of 24 are paid a mere €102 per week, while their fellow recipients receive about twice that amount.

Readers blog: Could you live on a mere €102 per week?

How can anyone be expected to live indefinitely on a mere €102 per week?

For those fortunate enough to live with their parents the problem will be alleviated somewhat. But what of those who for one reason or another cannot live at home? Or whose parents are now living apart or even deceased?

For those unfortunate young people it is a bleak outlook, with many of them living rough through no fault of their own.

This discrimination, on the grounds of age, should be put to bed for good and the sooner the better.

At least it would have one positive effect. There would be less shoplifting and robberies.
