Readers blog: Amidst all the noise and loneliness don't forget the Gift Of Time

It was my elderly mothers birthday. I was wondering what to get her for a present. Chocolates, flowers, clothes? 

I sat beside her on the couch. "Mum" I said. "What do you think is the finest present anyone could receive?" She smiled lovingly at me, She still had that twinkle in her eye.

"Son there are a lot of lonely people in the world. Some feel isolated, and withdrawn. I can tell you the finest gift you could ever give anyone, and it won't cost you a cent!"

I wondered what pearls of wisdom mum was going to impart to me. "Ah! mum there's no such thing as a free lunch these days" I retorted.

She smiled at me like she used to when I was just a little boy, and replied. " My son the finest gift you could give a lonely person is the gift of your time. Spend time with them. Means more to a lonely person. Then anything money can buy."

I kissed her cheek, and as usual mum was right.
