The decision by Viktor Orban to make it more difficult for immigrants to enter Hungary epitomises the greatest challenge facing the EU. How does it, how do we, deal with immigration?

Mr Orban is a strident nationalist who cares little for the EU and its objectives if they undermine the security of Hungary. His loyalty, as it should be, is to Hungary.

It is almost fashionable, in the way untested ideas become fashionable, to suggest with a furrowed brow that the EU is doomed, that it, as we approach the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, it will collapse and fade away, making room for the Old Europe to rise from the ashes of the New Europe. As yet, that is just an opinion and we should do all we can to ensure that it remains so.
