Those swamped by a miasma of despair over Donald Trump, Britain’s decision to quit the EU, and the angry swing away from the liberalism and tolerance that have, by and large, served the West pretty well since the end of the Second World War, may take some reassurance from one small detail that suggests all is not lost. The ultra-conservative provocateur and writer Milo Yiannopoulos, an accomplished, extremely articulate advocate of Mr Trump, has been told by publishers Simon & Schuster that they will not now publish his planned book because film footage of him appearing to condone paedophilia has emerged. Mr Yiannopoulos denies the charge but it has already cost him dearly.

One of his themes is how intolerant political correctness can be — he is right — but he and those who share his views may find that there are more than enough people ready to oppose the alt-right and its hatefulness dressed as policy or as a solution. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing, etc...
