Justice minister Jim O’Callaghan has been urged to temporarily extend pub licensing hours for the World Cup if the Republic of Ireland qualifies.
Independent TD Barry Heneghan told the the extension should be time-limited and temporary, arguing it would allow people to come together safely to cheer on the Boys in Green.
Heimir Hallgrímsson’s team are two match wins away from qualifying for this summer’s World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
The Republic of Ireland will play Czechia in late March, with the winner of the match facing either North Macedonia or Denmark to secure a place in the finals. Independent TD Barry Heneghan said although Ireland has yet to qualify, consideration should be given to extending opening hours now rather than closer to the tournament. File picture.
Mr Heneghan said although Ireland has yet to qualify for the championship, consideration should be given to extending opening hours now rather than closer to the tournament.
“The matches are going to start after midnight our time,” Mr Heneghan said.
"People will obviously want to support the team together safely and legally in a controlled environment.
“I don't see why Irish fans, if, please God, we do qualify, should be left behind.”
Mr Heneghan said pubs will not be forced to open late for the matches, and that while some people will not want to work, others will be appreciative of the extra hours.
The Dublin Bay North TD asked the justice minister in a parliamentary question but has yet to receive a response.
A spokesman for the Vintners Federation of Ireland said major sporting events are important for pubs and communities and bring a “much-needed boost to trade”.
“Allowing flexibility around opening hours for World Cup matches would recognise that reality and help make the most of what would be a significant national occasion,” they said.
